Johnston: corporate campuses on one side, family businesses on the other

Johnston is a Providence County town of 29,568 people (2020 Census), incorporated in 1759 and spread over about 24 square miles between Providence and Scituate. It has two economies that sit side by side. One is large and corporate: the insurer FM Global is based in Johnston, Citizens Bank opened a 425,000 square foot campus off Greenville Avenue in 2018, and Amazon opened a 3.8 million square foot fulfillment center off Hartford Avenue in November 2024. The state's only landfill is in Johnston too, with its own I-295 exit for the Resource Recovery Industrial Park.

The other economy is the one most small business owners belong to. It runs along Atwood Avenue (Route 5), Hartford Avenue (US 6A), Plainfield Pike (Route 14), Greenville Avenue and Killingly Street, and through villages such as Thornton, Graniteville, Hughesdale, Manton, Simmonsville and Pocasset. In the 2000 Census, 46.7 percent of residents reported Italian heritage, the highest share of any municipality in the country. That still shows in the town: St. Rocco's Church on Atwood Avenue holds its feast every August. West of I-295 the town turns rural, with the 1,000 acre Snake Den State Park and the working Dame Farm along Route 6.

Who I build for in Johnston

I work with the kinds of businesses and organizations that fill those corridors:

  • Restaurants, pizza shops, cafes and bakeries on Atwood, Hartford and Greenville Avenue

  • Landscapers, contractors, tree and lighting companies working out of Johnston and the towns around it

  • Medical, dental, eye care and behavioral health practices

  • Independent auto dealers, repair shops and body shops

  • Attorneys, accountants, insurance and real estate offices

  • Churches, clubs and nonprofits

  • Multi-location businesses and franchise brands with a Johnston location

How village names and the Providence line shape search in Johnston

Johnston touches Providence, North Providence, Cranston, Smithfield and Scituate, and I-295 and Route 6 put all of them a few minutes away. Google says it ranks local results on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is measured from the person searching, not from the town line. So a person in Graniteville looking for a dentist or a plumber sees businesses from several municipalities at once, and a Johnston business competes with Providence and Cranston companies on most searches.

Village names add a second wrinkle. Thornton sits on both sides of the Johnston and Cranston line. Manton is the name of a Johnston village and of the Providence neighborhood across the Woonasquatucket River. Residents use these names, but most people type "Johnston" or "near me". My rule is simple: the address, the page titles and the Google Business Profile say Johnston, RI. Village names go in the body copy where they are true, such as directions, a service area list or a line like "on Atwood Avenue in Thornton". They help a neighbor recognize you. They do not replace the town name.

One more point for businesses near the Providence line. Directory listings near the line sometimes show a Hartford Avenue address as Providence instead of Johnston. Your site, your Business Profile and your directory listings must all show the same town, street address and phone number, or Google has to guess which is right.

Page plans for four kinds of Johnston businesses

These are the pages I would plan first, and what each one has to answer.

A restaurant or bakery on Atwood or Hartford Avenue. The menu as real text, not a PDF or a photo, so Google and AI assistants can read every dish. Hours, including holiday hours. A catering page with what you cater, for how many, and how to order. A private events page if you have a room. Online ordering and reservations one tap from the top of every page. Parking and which side of the road you are on. I ran restaurants for years, so I build these around the questions the host stand gets all night.

A landscaper or contractor based in Johnston. One page per service: lawn care, hardscape, plowing, tree work, lighting. Each page says what is included, what a typical job involves, what season it runs and how to get an estimate. Then honest service area pages for the towns the crews really work in, which for a Johnston company often means Cranston, North Providence, Smithfield and Scituate as well. A project gallery with the town named on each job. A quote form short enough to finish in a truck.

A medical, dental or eye care practice. One page per service or condition, written for patients. A page for each provider with credentials and what they treat. Insurance accepted, new patient steps, forms, and how to book. Clear hours and a phone number that works as a tap on a phone. Accessibility basics: readable type, good contrast, labeled forms. For a practice with more than one office, a separate page for each location with its own address, hours and map.

An independent auto dealer or repair shop. For a dealer, inventory that loads fast and can be filtered on a phone, with a page for each vehicle, plus financing and trade-in pages that explain the steps. For a shop, one page per service: brakes, inspection, alignment, body work. Each says what the job covers and how to schedule. Both need hours, directions from Route 6 and I-295, and reviews that customers can find.

How a project with me runs

I start with the searches, not the design. The sequence is the same whether the job is a new site or search work on an existing one:

  • Talk. A call, a video meeting or a visit. I ask what you sell, who buys it, where they come from and what the current site is not doing.

  • Review. I look at your site, your Google Business Profile, your listings and what shows up for your main searches.

  • Proposal. A free written proposal with the scope: which pages, which platform, what search work, and what I need from you.

  • Plan the pages. A page list and an outline for each page, built on the questions customers ask.

  • Write and design. I write the copy and design the site around it. Every site is a custom design, not a template with a logo dropped in.

  • Build and check. Phone layout first, speed, forms, structured data, redirects from old URLs.

  • Launch. The site goes live, the Business Profile and listings are brought in line with it, and the pages are submitted to Google.

  • Keep it current. Maintenance and ongoing local SEO, AEO and GEO work are available after launch.

I ran restaurants and hospitality operations for years before I started this business in 2019, and I spent a year inside a lighting company handling sales, scheduling and service calls. I know what a phone call from the website is worth on a slow Tuesday. I do not promise rankings. I do tell you what I would fix first and why.

Any platform, including the one you already have

I am a Wix Legend Partner, but I am not Wix-only. I design and build on Wix Studio, WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly and any other builder or platform available to the public. If you like your current site, I can do the search work on it as it stands. If it runs on an older or legacy system from a previous agency, I can redesign and optimize it in place, as I did for Tree Medics. You do not have to rebuild to work with me.

For a business with several locations, or a franchise brand, I build location pages at scale. I have built more than 30,000 of them, along with the Christmas Decor franchise site and sites for more than 50 lighting companies. See programmatic SEO for how that works.

Rush timelines when the deadline is real

Some dates do not move. A lighting company needs its site ready before the holiday season. A restaurant has an opening date. A landscaper wants plowing pages up before the first storm. Expedited timelines are available for projects like these. Tell me the date on the first call and I will tell you what can be done well by then and what should wait.

Questions to ask any web designer before you hire one

  • Who writes the copy, and will it be specific to my business and my town?

  • Is the design custom, or a template with my logo on it?

  • Which platform do you recommend for me, and why that one?

  • What happens to my current pages and their URLs when the new site launches?

  • Will you set up or correct my Google Business Profile as part of the job?

  • How do you prepare a site so AI assistants can read and cite it?

  • Who do I call after launch when something needs to change?

  • Can I see sites you built for businesses like mine?

A good answer is specific. If the answer to the first question is "you send us the content", plan for that work yourself or budget for a writer.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a web designer near Johnston, RI?

Yes. I am based in Seekonk, Massachusetts, about 10 miles from Johnston, and I design and maintain websites for small businesses and organizations in the area. I can meet in person in Johnston or work by phone and video. I build on Wix Studio, WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace and other publicly available builders, and every project starts with a free proposal.

How do I get my Johnston business to show up on Google Maps?

Start with a complete, accurate Google Business Profile: the right primary category, your services, hours, photos and a steady flow of real reviews. Then make sure your website states your address, service area and services clearly on a fast, phone-friendly page. Johnston businesses compete with Providence, Cranston and North Providence listings, so relevance and reviews both matter.

Do I need a new website to do SEO for my Johnston business?

No. I do local SEO, answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization on whatever platform your site already runs on, including WordPress, Wix, Shopify and Squarespace. I only recommend a rebuild when the current site is too slow, too hard to edit or too thin on content to fix sensibly. I will tell you which case you are in before any work starts.

Can a Johnston contractor rank in Providence, Cranston and Smithfield too?

Often yes, if the site earns it. A Johnston contractor who really works in neighboring towns can build a dedicated page for each one, with real detail about the work done there. Google Maps results lean heavily on distance from your address, so town pages mostly help in the regular results below the map. I cannot promise rankings.

Can you meet in person in Johnston, RI?

Yes. I am based in Seekonk, Massachusetts, about 10 miles from Johnston, and I meet in person anywhere in my local area. I can come to your shop, office or job site in Johnston to see how the business runs before I plan the site. Phone, text and video work too, and I reply within 24 hours.

Can you build a website fast for a Johnston business with a deadline?

Yes, expedited timelines are available when the deadline is real, such as a restaurant opening date or a lighting or landscaping company heading into its busy season. Tell me the date on the first call. I will tell you plainly what can be built well by then and what should follow after launch.
